Baby Marrows, Patty Pans & Baby Gems

Baby Marrows: Baby marrow is a little version of the marrow (also known as zucchini or courgette). The marrow is a family member of the cucumber. Marrow is native to Italy. The fruit can be yellow or green. It generally has a similar shape to a cucumber, though some are round or bottle-shaped. Marrows with the flowers attached are a sign of a truly fresh and immature fruit. These immature fruits have the most flavour.

Patty Pans: A patty pan is a pumpkin-like fruit and is related to the cucumber family. Patty pans are native to the tropical regions of South America. Patty pan is a type of summer squash with a distinctive shape. A patty pan has a fat center and deeply scalloped edges. The fruit is white, yellow or green in colour. The flavour of patty pan is similar to that of other summer squashes, like baby marrow.

Baby Gems:  Baby gems are harvested before it is ripe (about golf ball size) due to its having a more delicate flavour and texture. Commonly served vegetable in South Africa, often boiled or baked. The cooked gem squash is then generally cut in half, and the inside is commonly covered in butter or brown sugar to enhance flavour.
